Product

How do we work with our suppliers?

For us, it has been crucial to find suppliers and productions actively working to reduce environmental challenges in the textile industry. It is essential that our products are produced in a controlled and limited quantity to minimize waste and avoid overproduction. Additionally, we work closely with our suppliers to reduce the production of samples, prioritizing digital over physical product development.

How do we ensure responsible production?

All our suppliers have received and signed our Code of Conduct, which is our way of ensuring our purpose runs through our entire value chain.

We also ask our suppliers to share all relevant certifications they have with us and encourage them to invest in new certifications that can provide documentation of our impact and shared mission.

What is our swimwear made of?

Our swim and sportswear is primarily made of ECONYL® regenerated nylon yarn (78%) made from recycled nylon waste such as old fishing nets from harbors, fishing, the sea, and other places in aquaculture. It can also be old carpet remnants and other nylon waste that would otherwise end up in landfills or, in the worst case, the ocean. The recycled nylon is mixed with elastane for a perfect fit. ECONYL® regenerated nylon yarn can also consist of industrial surplus nylon waste. All of this is considered worthless trash, but we recycle and recreate it, allowing us to create new products for you without using new resources.

The final fabric in our swim and sportswear consists of 78% ECONYL® regenerated nylon yarn and 22% elastane.

ECONYL® regenerated nylon yarn (78%) is spun together with elastane (22%), creating a material that is stretchy and soft, giving all our products a shaping effect that keeps them in place, even when you move in them.

What is OCN WEED®?

Our patented OCN WEED® fabric is created by blending SeaCell™ and organic cotton, a symphony of nature's own materials. SeaCell™ is an innovative fiber derived from seaweed and wood pulp (cellulose). The remarkable thing about seaweed is that it is a natural and regenerating resource that already grows abundantly in the sea, meaning it doesn't need any additional water except what it's already in.

The composition of our OCN WEED® fabric is 30% SeaCell™ and 70% organic cotton.

Together, they create a material that can be described as nature's symphony.

What is SeaCell?

SeaCell™ is created from brown algae, Ascophyllum Nodosum, also known as Knotted Wrack, found in the sea. The algae are harvested with special machines that do not cause permanent damage to the plant. The algae are naturally dried, roughly chopped, and not subjected to any chemical treatment. This ensures that the natural properties of the algae are preserved.

SeaCell™ fiber is CO2-neutral and biodegradable, created through a closed-loop production system – a process that recycles water and reuses up to 99% of the solvents used. This creates very little waste and results in a fiber that biologically breaks down in water, landfills, and other composting environments.

What materials do we use?

As part of our mission to challenge traditional production and consumption patterns, we work closely with suppliers and other innovative startups in our search for innovative materials and processes.

We use existing alternative materials and also create our own material science. We dream of developing and introducing new and innovative materials.

Responsibility

How do we work with partnerships?

We know there are many answers and solutions to preserving and ensuring sustainable use of the sea and its resources. However, we are convinced that to achieve our mission, it will require collective action.

Therefore, we collaborate with other brands in an effort to bring together as many hands as possible to create a positive change for the sea. We believe that the more we stand together, the greater the impact. For us, collaboration is a conversation starter to show, educate, and inspire more people to see the value and potential available when we restore the alliance between the sea and humanity.

How do we ensure responsibility in our partnerships?
When we enter a partnership, it's because we see the value and strength in using the shared resources we have – our voices and our brands/companies – to raise awareness and give back to the sea.

We ensure that every partnership with us aligns with the following:

Creates measurable impact
Transforms waste into value.
Is not at the expense of the sea
Invites dialogue
Gives back to the sea

Do we donate to the sea?

Through our self-imposed sea tax, 1% FOR THE PLANET, we have committed to donating 1% of our annual revenue to approved nonprofit organizations, all actively contributing to the preservation of the world's oceans. 1% for the Planet is a global movement advocating for companies that profit from the planet's precious resources to also give back by contributing to the work of protecting and preserving it. Giving back is one of our core values, and at Copenhagen Cartel, we are proud to be a member of an organization that motivates businesses to take a stand and support verified environmental efforts through membership and action. Through our membership in 1% for the Planet, we donate to organizations and NGOs actively contributing to a healthier marine environment.

How do we save a baby sea turtle with each product sold?

We support SEE Turtles' "Billion Baby Turtles" project, and for every product we sell, both B2C and B2B, we donate to save a baby sea turtle on your behalf. By supporting SEE Turtles' Billion Baby Turtles program, you help protect vital nesting beaches around the world and ensure that hatched hatchlings safely reach the water. The donation helps local environmental organizations recruit local residents to patrol the beaches and protect the eggs, which are illegally sold on the black market in many places. More than 4 million baby sea turtles have already been saved. SEE Turtles uses 85% of all donations for conservation efforts, and 5% of donations go to the Sea Turtle Inclusivity Fund to invest in local communities. 10% of each donation goes to program management and administration.

When do we hold clean-up events?

Every year, we organize clean-up events with passionate individuals, brands, companies, and environmental organizations to help clean up the Danish seas from waste and plastic. We organize both public and private clean-up events, and for both the Copenhagen Cartel team and management, it is an integral part of our daily lives, whether working in design or as the CEO.

Through our clean-up events, we bring challenges to the surface, highlight the very real problems beneath the surface, and through relationships with people and collaboration with companies, organizations, and NGOs, we educate and inspire action.
